My Trip Out East

Chef Philman George Ideas & Inspiration

I just got back from an amazing trip to the east coast of Canada.  The purpose of the trip was to partake in "Seafood Savvy", a 3 day course that High Liner holds for all of its employees.  The course educates us on the intricacies of the seafood business and the history and future of High Liner Foods Inc.  The above picture was taken in the small town of Lunenburg overlooking the harbour, where High Liner Foods was founded over 100 years ago. Lunenburg is such a neat little town, and most families can trace their history back to the days of braving the high seas with very little technology.  This town takes extreme pride in their robust fishing history!

Speaking of history, we got a chance to tour the Fishery Museum in Lunenburg! I could post pictures for days, but I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't been.  I'll only post this one picture of this King Kong Lobster caught off the coast many moons ago.  That's my golf-size umbrella on top to give you an idea of how big this lobster is!!! You must take a guided tour of the Museum, as the tour guides are all locals and can help put things into perspective for you. The history runs deep!! So deep that the actual Fishery Museum used to be the old High Liner processing plant back in the day. Back then it was called the W.C. Smith & Company.

Fast forward to today, and High Liner has one of the most modern seafood processing plants in the world.  This picture was taken just outside of the plant in Lunenburg.  One of the things that makes this company so strong in Canada is our dedicated sales team.  That’s me posing with some of our Quebec sales reps.  No other seafood company in Canada has as many sales reps as we have.  We cover the entire country with people that know and love their seafood!!

If you are ever in Lunenburg make sure you check out this little spot called the Island View Restaurant.  It's just a 30 min drive from town, close to Mohone Bay.  It's been around for over 50 years serving up some delicious seafood creations.  Their Haddock fish and chips are to die for... and you have the option of breaded or battered.  You can't leave this place until you have the breaded/battered Scallops.  They were so sweet I ordered another round for dessert!!!  I think the only thing sweeter than the Scallops was the service staff. This will be a regular stop for me every time I visit Lunenburg!

Until next time...

Stay hungry my friends!!
